Adult Rehabilitation Center

If you or someone you love is suffering from chemical dependency, seek help before things get worse. It is a very rare case when an addict is able to kick their demons on their own. Usually it takes an extensive medically supervised program. For this you will need to find an adult rehabilitation center. These centers are trained to help detoxify and rehabilitate adults suffering from addictions to substances like alcohol, methamphetamines, opiates, benzodiazepines, narcotics and various others whether they are illegal, prescription or OTC.


One thing these facilities offer is supervised rehab under medical care. Some substances like alcohol, prescription painkillers, benzodiazepines, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and others have severe withdrawal symptoms that can range from unpleasant to deadly. Abrupt discontinuation of certain substances can cause seizures and even heart failure. These rehab facilities can either taper the individual down to zero or substitute an illegal substance with a legal pharmaceutical to help ease the detoxification process. During this time medical and nutritional evaluations and adjustments will be done. The duration of the detoxification process depends on the substance being discontinued and the severity of the dependence.

After the acute detox process the patient will be moved to an intermediate facility with other patients who have already been through the detox phase. Here the patient will become accustomed to functioning without the substance to which they were addicted. They will participate in individual and group activities, attend therapy, perform everyday household chores and continue to be monitored medically and nutritionally. The goal of any facility is to teach the patient how to live a clean lifestyle in the real world. Patients are usually allowed to visit with friends and family during designated times and can write letters home as well.

When choosing an adult rehabilitation center look for one that offers post attendance counseling and followup. Often patients do well when inside the safe haven of the facility, but have trouble once they are back home. For them there are followup programs that reinforce the skills taught and give the patient encouragement to stay clean. There are also rehab programs for friends and family members close to the individual which can teach them how to cope and how to best help their loved one.
