Betty Ford Center
When you think about the Betty Ford Center, one woman comes to mind. The former First Lady who founded and named this treatment facility after herself. Ms. Ford actually completed her own rehabilitation treatment for substance abuse and dependency at the Long Beach U.S. Naval Hospital. After her experience she spoke to her friends at great length about the desperate need for a treatment center that recognized and responded to the unique needs of women. One of those friends, Ambassador Leonard Firestone, gave her the encouragement she needed to get her dream off the ground. In 1982, they founded the not-for-profit center located in the California town of Rancho Mirage.
Although the initial thoughts of Ms. Ford were to create a treatment center for women, the center bearing her name actually treats both women and men who are suffering with addiction and/or dependency. From day one the center reserved half the space for female guests and half the space for male guests which continues to this day. The treatment administered is specific to gender and males and females live in separate halls. The center also offers integrated programs for the patient's family because when one member is affected the entire family unit is as well. Chemical dependency is just as hard on the parents, children, siblings and friends of addicts as it is on the addict themselves.
The center offers support for youngsters through the Children's program which is for ages 7 to 12 in addition to a five day Family program. These programs help kids, parents, siblings, grandparents, friends and other loved ones adjust to the situation, learn more about their chemically dependent loved one and learn the skills necessary to care for and live with this type of individual. They also learn valuable coping skills for their own emotional needs and how to care for themselves while caring for others. They are taught how to love and support their chemically dependant loved one without enabling or arguing which are very important skills. They are also instructed on how to appropriately support their loved one once they are released from treatment.
The Betty Ford Center is open to all individuals, as long as they have the right insurance coverage or the funds to pay for the treatment. You may already know that celebrities like Chevy Chase, William Hurt, Elizabeth Taylor and Liza Minelli have obtained treatment at the center. This doesn't mean the facilities are just for the rich and famous, the center treats all kinds of people despite notoriety or affluence. If you have questions about the center there is a website that offers plenty of information and a toll free telephone number you can call.
