Rehab Alcoholism

The word rehab means to repair, to fix. To rehab alcoholism means to eliminate the problem of alcoholism. This should never, ever be attempted on one's own. The first thing you should do if you suspect an alcohol problem is see your doctor. He or she may want to talk to you about your drinking. When do you drink? How often? How much? What kind of alcohol are you drinking? They may even want to run various blood tests like a liver panel test to check the function of your organs. After a thorough evaluation a diagnosis will be made.

You and your doctor may decide that you require inpatient treatment for your alcoholism. This may be court ordered for you if you have gotten a DUI or committed an alcohol-related crime. Regardless of why you end up in rehab, it is important to learn the basics so you'll know what to expect. The first phase is evaluation. This means more testing and basically just watching you and monitoring your vital signs. Depending on the severity of your alcoholism there may be medications and fluids administered during the detoxification process.

The detoxification process for an alcoholic can be unpleasant and even dangerous. This is why an inpatient facility is so important because there are doctors and nurses at the ready at all times. You may sweat, shake, shiver. You may experience delirium tremens or seizures. You may get sick to your stomach or become mentally enraged or out of control. Or, none of these things may happen. Your doctors at the facility will monitor you carefully and give you any medications, vitamins, fluids and nutrition they feel is necessary for your condition.

After the detoxification phase, the next step in rehab alcoholism is to learn to live sober. This may mean participating in a 12-step program on the premises with other patients. You may be given cleaning tasks and made to participate in group activities. In addition you will receive individual and group counseling and medical checkups. The length of your stay will depend on the severity of your condition. After the acute detoxification period your family can visit you on certain days and times as designated by the treatment facility.
