Vocational Rehabilitation Centers

The purpose of a vocational rehabilitation center is to help an injured or disabled individual develop the mental and physical skills necessary to sustain gainful employment in their community. These centers are ideal for those who have been injured on the job, injured during military service or who are suffering from other injuries or disabilities. Often these centers provide therapy in addition to job training and job placement. Therefore they are ideal for adults who want to work but require assistance because of their personal mental or physical situation.

These centers are not usually inpatient. They are outpatient programs that require attendance for certain classes and programs. Once the student has successfully completed a required program and deemed appropriate for job placement they will be placed in a suitable position. For disabled individuals, these rehab centers provide them with life-enriching opportunities they may have not been able to obtain otherwise. There are inpatient facilities, but they may combine occupational and vocational therapy with physical and mental treatment as well.

To find one of these centers in your local area, check the Yellow Pages. If you can't find any listings, call your local United Way or Salvation Army. Although these organizations may not run the centers they should surely know about them. Your local Chamber of Commerce is another idea when searching for such a facility. Even your physician may be able to refer you to a program ideal for the needs of you or your loved one based on their specific condition. One thing is certain these programs can work wonders and can create happiness and confidence in individuals struggling to live normal lives.

When shopping around for a vocational rehabilitation center you should consult with several if possible. Of course there may only be one in your area. It all depends on where you are. Your local department of Social Services can help place you or your loved one in a center if you are currently working with them. Even if you're not, you may want to schedule an appointment with a social worker who specializes in assisting the disabled. You will find that vocational training programs are fun and useful, and offer individuals the education they need to find and keep jobs they are able to do.
